Billy, how can something available to everyone, like livescope, give anyone an '' unfair advantage '' ?
One thing I think is missing. How many fish are bagged in Scope events compared to Non-Scope events?
How is this still a topic of discussion? EVERYONE in a tournament uses it. How is it giving younger people an advantage. Like when people say our he wouldn’t have won with FFS. What about the other 100 guys that have it, how come they didn’t win that day? Ope he’s young and won guess he’s cheating and has an advantage because he has the same technology as me, just is better at it.
Billy you are spot on! Let’s be honest, which professional angler that is really good at it, that consistently wins with it, is anti FFS? NONE!!! The PRO anglers that are speaking out know how to use it, can use it, but not as good at it as these younger pro anglers. Look at the older pros Wheeler, Connell, Birge, Johnston Bros, Christie, etc.. they learned it and are competitive with it and without it. Top level pros against FFS were good without it, but not competitive with it, so naturally they are going to speak out against it. There is so much money in the fishing industry why don't the just make a 50 50 adjustment instead of a 1/3 adjustment? Because there are more Pro anglers that are more competitive without it than they are with it, that is why! The truth of the matter is the older a person gets, the more resistant they are to change, that is a fact. Another thing is as you get older it gets harder to keep up with younger people physically and mentally, so in their minds, to keep the playing field closer they resist technology. New technology means more time on the water trying to learn and become experts but they have other responsibilities (families, sponsors, etc…) while the younger anglers are growing up with technology, computers, phones, video games, etc… they comprehend electronics better and faster.
Billy, you know who I am and have known me before you started guiding part time, yet alone full. After 32 years of competitive bass fishing and starting at 12 years old. Here is my concern. I 😂use FFS. It’s a tool. That said, listen to Hackney’s interview on the Mercer podcast. My fear is the affordability to get young people in the sport. The tournament orgs need to look at the perception. Could you afford $20K in electronics when you started guiding right after you got done selling beer? Yes, all theese men can fish or they wouldn’t be there. But, I also think viewership likes to see Carl busting them on 50lbs braid punching. The hide-up under the docks. But their is a point when there has to be a correction. I also feel like if you are elite or on bpt you should still be able to fish with out it. Age also has its factor that know one wants to face. So the youth domination would still be tough as the vets age. That’s not snow if your beard bud it’s death coming on. I am afraid the perception is you have to have FFS or you can’t catch bass. Takes the purity out of it. I think both leagues have adapted and listened to the viewer. But, it’s certainly an issue that’s not going anywhere though. TIGHT LINES & My Best, Justin

Lets look at most of these anglers that are complaining 25 years ago when the trend in technology brought advances to sonar for that generation of angler. Not one person complained when KVD used side scan to “see” fish and structure off to the side of the boat. He became an expert using this technology and dominated the Bassmaster Tournaments during his era because many of the “older” anglers did not know how to effectively use the new technology available. Then when down scan and even 2D scan got more precise anglers like Aaron Martens used it to their advantage to target and see fish below the boat and drop a lure “drop shotting” on their head or near them. Again not one person complained because that was “their thing” at that time. Go back and look at videos and you can see KVD and Martens saying how the current technology allowed them to see fish and target them live. There is no difference with a sonar beam now shooting out of the front of the boat. Most of the anglers complaining are the older guys that in any other sport would have aged out and passed the torch to the younger generation. Even the younger guys that are complaining now are mostly guys that fished side scan and down scan and when FFS came out it was new to them so it became bad because there was a learning curve to effectively understand the new technology. I’m 50+ years old and have watched Bassmaster most of my adult life. I think FFS is saving the sport not hurting it. Everyone says well every other sport has limits, really?????? Look at the game of football and baseball 30 years ago to today. Advances in technology, nutrition, video, etc. has made players better. Baseball is big on technology especially if you look at pitching and hitting in depth. Pitchers are throwing harder mainly because of video training that was not around 25 years ago. Effectively using the body more efficiently enables a pitcher yo throw harder. With hitting its very similar. Analyzing your hands, load, stride and launch angle was not a thing 25 years ago. When my son was a freshman in college playing baseball he was 5 foot 11 inches weighing 160-170 lbs and efficiently using his body mechanics enabled him to hit ball 420+ feet (something unheard of for a kid his size 25 years ago). Fishing is no different. Use the current technology to your advantage. For the older angler it’s learn it and win or sit back and do nothing and finish at the back of the pack. It’s time many of these guys pass the torch to the younger generation. I see people saying “but KVD says it’s bad” – funny he wasn’t saying a thing 20-25 years ago and didn’t think what he was doing with side scan was bad for the sport because he was putting money in his bank account. Hank Parker was against it up until earlier this year. Go watch his podcast from a few weeks ago. He now has a new acceptance of the technology because he spent time with it and fished with Todd Castledine.
Hi Billy. Are all Lake Fork guides using FFS with their clients? I don't have any interest in catching a bass that someone tells me exactly where their mouth is, so "cast right there". I wouldn't have any pride or sense of accomplishment/satisfaction, even if I busted a 10 pounder, which is my ultimate fishing goal. From 2007 to 2013, I fished annually with a guide there. Just when I was considering a return, FFS took over and I lost interest, unless the client has the option of not using FFS. I fished with Jimmy Everett, Tom Redington, Larry Barnes, Ronnie Kelley, Jason Hoffman, and Eric Wright. They were all great and I learned a lot from them. I don't want to learn how to shake a minnow bait. I'm very sad about the state of bass fishing.
Man, nobody wants to say it, so I will. How is it an advantage when anyone can do it? The bottom line is that the older guys don't want to learn it as well as the young guys.
I don’t like scope in the pros but you can’t say those young guys aren’t good. Their biggest advantage time on the water they are young no family and other responsibilities. Is what it is.

I think the scopers are learning fish behavior quickly by scoping which shortens their learning curve to fish without scope. The veterans' learning curve on scope is longer. Interesting and surprising data.
