These are lightning fishing stories you won’t forget—some personal, some from my years guiding on Lake Fork, and a few that’ll straight up chill you. If you’ve ever wondered, “is it safe to fish in lightning?” I used to think so… until I got hit. Twice.
You ever stay too long on the lake chasin’ a bite—knowing full well a storm’s rolling in?
Yeah… me too. More than once.
From floating line and buzzing rods to real stories of lives lost and boats blown apart, this one dives deep into the dark side of our diehard fishing mindset—the pride, the addiction, and the price.
If you’ve ever fished through thunder just for “one more cast,” this one’s for you.

Hey Tom- those were some great stories and also a wonderful great reminder to take all lightning strikes extremely serious. I’ve had some of my own close calls where lighting struck a tree with in 25 yards of me that caused it to catch fire while I was also fishing a bass tournament. The thunder clap afterwards being that close to where it hit felt like it opened my chest up. I learned that day that no matter what tournament I’m fishing, it’s certainly not worth losing your life over!🎣⚡️😮
Great video
The first time I heard my rod buzzing I thought it was my head buzzing from the electricity in the air. I jumped down into the bottom of the boat. After I resumed fishing I figured out it was my rod. It was bad that day when you see it streaking though the clouds right above you. After seeing huge trees explode into splinters on videos, I get off the water now. I had a tree near me get hit when I was a kid and I was dove hunting. Me setting there holding a metal shotgun lightning rod.
Nothing to mess with. Good stories.
I’ve experienced the line floating issue before a storm and got off the lake in a hurry. Another time I was on the LA side of Toledo Bend and saw a tornado on the TX side. The fish were biting like crazy but we got off the lake in a hurry then also.
Thanks for sharing your stories because I’m sure there’s plenty of guys who don’t know how serious they should take threatening weather.
Hey Tom- I meant to also ask you if there is anyway I could see some of your old TV shows you filmed with Mark Pack bass fishing. I really learned a lot from you guys. You both were great teachers but also were very funny!😆👍🏻
May Mark RIP!❤️
